A study on repetition and indeterminacy in architectural design

Yerevan’s Soviet past has left the legacy of plattenbau housing blocks, characterized by the repetitiveness they produce in the experience of urban space. The blocks in Norashen, Yerevan, have been modified, weathered, damaged and repaired independently by users, creating a layer of indeterminate singularities that articulate the otherwise identical repetition.

This brings forth the question of whether and how indeterminacy can be introduced and integrated into architectural design in order to create architecture that is explicitly driven by (material) agencies beyond the architect’s premeditated choices.
